Past its cell-by date?

May 30th, 2007

Chris Neal writes in his article on this site that “the cell church model as expressed in the 90’s well may have reached it’s sell by date”.

-Do you agree?

-If so, why and in what ways?

-If not, why not?

Add your comments below and lets get a decent argument discussion going as this site kicks off.

Having only begun cell church in the new millenium, I am not really aware of the aspects of 90s model which Chris thinks have reached their sell by date. What are they?

Sally, I think Chris is referring to the Singapore model that was brought over by Ralph Neighbour with a particualt structure for cell cupervision, cell meetings (4w’s), an “equipping track” and a process of cell multiplication very 18 months.

From my perspective, many churches are still using some or all of those elements and finidng them to be life giving. Others dismissed them from the start as too prescriptive and not well enough contextualised for our context, while others found them to be a very helpful way to learn a new approach to small groups (kind of like stabilisers on a bicycle), but are now exploring a wider range of creative approaches to missional small groups. I’m guessing Chris is coming from the third group.
